Bullets Nov 09Betsuin Board Bullets The intent of the Betsuin Board Bullets is to highlight Board actions, decisions, special events and projects. Please contact the Betsuin board officers, directors, or the ministers for more details on any item. Ministers’ Report The Betsuin Buddhist Education Committee and the Betsuin Ministers are presenting a lecture on Gandharan Art with guest lecturer, Dr Nicholas J. Bridger, on Saturday, December 12, 2009 at 1:00 pm in the Betsuin Board Room. Everyone is welcome to attend. Gandharan art is one of the earliest Buddhist art traditions from central Asia (which encompasses present-day Northern Pakistan and Eastern Afghanistan), which flourished during the Kushan period from the 1st through the 5th centuries. Gandharan art is a merger of Greek, Syrian, Persian and Indian artistic influences. Dr. Bridger is a noted lecturer on world art and world history and has taught at various colleges and universities in the area. His presentation will include slides and pictures. Kawakami Property Purchase According to the terms in the Memorandum of Understanding between the Kawakami Family and the San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin, the purchase price is $400,000. It was moved/seconded/passed to direct the unrestricted donated funds from Sangha member Ned Satake to be used to purchase the Kawakami Property in the amount of $150,000. It was moved/seconded/passed to direct the unrestricted funds from the estate of the late Takashi Yoshioka Trust Fund for the purchase the Kawakami Property. The Yoshioka Trust Fund bequeathed $100,000 to the Betsuin and the interest accrued is $11,447.44 which makes the total of this gift $111,447.44. Funds for the Kawakami Property Purchase to date: $150,000.00 Ned Satake Donation $111,447.44 Takashi Yoshioka Trust Fund $ 25,000.00 Ray and Lucy Matsumoto Donation $ 19,415.00 2009 Betsuin Golf Tournament Profit $ 10,800.00 2007 Betsuin Golf Tournament Profit (approx) ___________ $316,662.44 Total to Date (approx) An estimate of $50,000 for improvements is projected. The Betsuin Board agrees that fundraising projects must be planned and implemented for the remaining purchase costs and to replenish funds from our assets as well as improvements costs for this property purchase. § Archive Committee 2010 Pocket calendars are now on sale for $5.00. Plastic covers may also be purchased for $1.00. The theme of the 2010 calendars is the Betsuin Buddhist Women’s Association which features images of this group throughout time. A “no-tap” bowling tournament is set for Saturday, March 20, 2010 to raise funds to purchase necessary materials and items for the Betsuin Archives. § EcoSangha Committee The next Betsuin Earth Day celebration is set for Sunday, May 02, 2010. To raise funds for this event, the EcoSangha Committee continues to sell spam musubi and ecobags. § Buddhist Churches of America Shinran Shonin 750th Memorial Observance, Symposium and Banquet Saturday and Sunday, February 27 and 28, 2010 San Jose Fairmont www.ingassho.com Go to www.ingassho.com for schedule of events and other details. It was moved/seconded/passed to offer San Jose Betsuin members a $15.00 registration subsidy up to 200 people to attend the symposium and/or banquet. Full registration fee is $110.00. With the $15.00 subsidy, registration fee will be $95.00. To take advantage of the $15.00 subsidy, members need to complete the registration form and attach the $15.00 off coupon, then submit the registration form, the coupon and payment to the Betsuin Office by January 17, 2010.
